CPS EFFECTIVE IN DALLAS HIGH SCHOOL...

NBC5, a Dallas area TV station, recently featured a story on Classroom Performance System (CPS) response pads. The newscast focused on improvements made in a North Dallas high school algebra class that uses CPS response pad technology effectively in the classroom.

The class achieved 100% passing, up from 70%, when using the CPS response pads in the classroom. Students were able to answer text and numeric questions in class and get immediate results. The CPS technology allowed the teacher to identify comprehension levels and immediately re-teach in areas in need of improvement. View News Story

CALLING ALL MATH TEACHERS...

I spent some time this week talking with Karla Brown, creator of Common Sense Math, a tool to supplement classroom curriculum and help parents & students at home. Common Sense Math encourages math basics, mental math skills, and common vocabulary needed for problem solving.

Karla is available for inservice training and is a regular user of CPS in her trainings. She has even created "pre-made clicker lessons" that correspond with Common Sense Math. These lessons are yet another example of how CPS can be used in the formative assessment arena on a daily basis.

See how Common Sense Math can be integrated with the technology in your classroom and try the demo of Common Sense Math!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH...

“I like to refer to it as broadcollecting as opposed to broadcasting...It raises the quality of thinking in the classroom on the fly. It creates a great opportunity for interaction with peers, not just instructors.”
-- Tom Haffie from the University of Western Ontario
on the use of clickers in the classroom

Which would you rather be, a broadcaster or a broadcollector?
Which would your students prefer you to be?

DID YOU KNOW?

There are three very effective ways to build an ExamView-formatted test using Learning Series question banks.

  1. With Select while Viewing, instructors can view questions and select which ones to include on a test. The complete question and answer, as well as question information (e.g., Bloom's Taxonomy levels, state standards) appear in the viewing window. This is an excellent way to preview questions before adding them to a test.

Quick Tip: The Learning Series organizes its question banks so that all questions related to a state standard are grouped together. Therefore, when using the Select while Viewing method with question information displayed (i.e., click Show Info), instructors can quickly preview and select multiple questions that assess the same state standard.

  1. In Select by Standard mode, instructors can choose questions for a test based on state standard or learning objective. In Learning Series questions, the state standard includes the standard ID codes to which the questions are aligned. The learning objective consists of the text or description of the standard to which the questions are aligned. This method provides an easy way to create a test quickly to help determine which standards students have met and which ones they still need to work on.

  1. With the Select by Criteria method, instructors can create custom tests based on a number of different criteria derived from the question information fields that are populated in the Learning Series questions. For example, select all multiple-choice questions that relate to a specific state standard and a certain Bloom's Taxonomy level. Select by Criteria is perhaps most useful when using Learning Series questions for daily classroom learning and instruction.

Refer to ExamView Help to learn more about these question selection methods.

FROM THE DESK OF...Dustin Frank

Halloween is behind us and some of our students have been scared into focusing on their school work after their first quarter grades came out! Now is a great time to really expand your repertoire of CPS usage. CPS is always a great tool for formative teaching as you lecture, but how about bell work, pre and post tests, grading homework, or simply for review in a Challenge Board (Jeopardy) activity? With a short break between fall and winter activities, now is a great time to expand your CPS toolbox.

Many of you have some wonderful ideas and techniques that you use everyday; we’d love to hear about them. Visit our website and tell us how you are using CPS in your class. You might even find yourself a winner!

Sincerely,

Dustin K. Frank
