Clickers in Action

Clickers seem to be a very good idea on paper, but what about clickers in action? Well, believe it or not, as good as they seem on paper, they're even better in action!

If you've never seen a classroom full of kids using clickers, you are missing out. The enthusiasm is contagious, as the entire demeanor of the classroom changes when kids are using clickers. Learning is fun!

At a higher level of education, it is thrilling to see a quiet lecture hall filled only with the droning sound of the ever-going professor turned into a buzz of activity as students try to convince each other why their answer is correct.

Clickers are truly changing the dynamics of classrooms around the world.

The below video features Dr. Corly Brooke, a professor of human development and family studies at Iowa State University. Dr. Brooke is shown using clickers in her large university classes, moving throughout the room as students answer. In this video, she gives some great suggestions for using clickers in large university classes. Many of these tips can also be used in the K-12 classroom also.

Newscast from NY1 News covering the use of clickers at Williamsburg Collegiate Charter School in Brooklyn. This newscasts shows the clickers in action in Student-Paced Mode and provides interviews with the students that are using them on a daily basis. This is the same school featured in the eInstruction video below.

We were fortunate enough to get to see the teacher featured in this video, Eric Green, present at our Winter eInstruction Meeting in January 2010. He was so inspiring and reminded me once again of the difference that eInstruction products are making in classrooms all over the world. There is nothing more exciting than seeing a school take technology "by the horns" with clear goals and organized implementation.

Williamsburg Collegiate-using CPS clickers, the Interwrite Mobi, and a plan-took their students from 65% passing the state exam to 100% passing the state exam.

After viewing the video, read how Erik Green went on to incorporate CPS clickers into a district math competition...

A very nicely done video of a Grassroots Project at the British Columbia Institute of Technology: Engaging Students in Large Lectures. The video features Glenn Pelligrin, faculty member in Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology. This clicker video contains footage of clickers being used, as well as comments from some of his students. I absolutely loved the student's comment that using the clicker "rushes the mind" after a long day of many classes whose teachers use the same presentation techniques hour after hour.

A video excerpt of "From Questions to Concepts: Interactive Teaching in Physics with Eric Mazur" showing Eric Mazur, physicist and educator at Harvard University, demonstrating his model of peer instruction in his own lecture class. A great example of clickers at the university level and Eric Mazur's peer instruction model.
