• Use Clickers & Donate Rice For Hunger

I came across this site yesterday, www.freerice.com, which has a great vocabulary game on it. For each answer you get right, 20 grains of rice will be donated through the UN World Food Program to help end hunger.

The game gives you one word (which gets more difficult the more questions you answer correctly) and the 4 answer choices are set up like a multiple choice question - a perfect setup to incorporate clickers!

Just use the verbal mode and label the answer choices A,B,C and D. You might not even need to label the answer choices, as junior high or high school students could probably remember which letter corresponds with which answer.

Your students are expanding their vocabulary and earning rice to end world hunger at the same time. How's that for multi-tasking? You might also find that your students are even motivated to play this activity at home outside of the classroom!

This website does come with a warning, however. "WARNING: This game may make you smarter. It may improve your speaking, writing, thinking, grades, and job performance!"

Your 200, 500 or 1,000 grains may not seem like much by itself, but consider that in its first five months, FreeRice generated enough rice to feed more than one million people.

• UNO's experience with CPS clickers

UNO logoWe've added a great new addition to the top of our CPS Success page!

Jay Killion, Assistant Director of Academic Computing at University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), shared with us the PowerPoint that he and Ted Turgeon, Instructional Designer at UNO, developed for their presentation at the EDUCAUSE Midwest Regional Conference this spring.

After a comprehensive "clicker study," UNO standardized on CPS in 2007. This presentation outlines their implementation process, their challenges, and success.

Title: A Strategic Approach to Implementing Clickers

Abstract: This presentation will outline the process the University of Nebraska at Omaha used to implement a standardized clicker system. The goal was to ensure clickers were employed as an enduring pedagogical tool and not treated as another fad. The challenge was removing the barriers to adoption and creating communities of practice.

    • Interesting discussion after data slicing with clickers

    I've added several new stories on our CPS Success page lately.

    One of the latest is a blog post detailing the use of clickers in a law classroom at UCLA Law School. In this account, considerable discussion was generated by the data slicing that was done (something CPS makes so easy!).

    I've also added an instructor testimonial from Ryerson School of Nursing and a great account from a 4th grade teacher whose students are begging to use the "remote thingies!"

    See how CPS is jumpstarting success...

    • Critical Mac update issued after KU fiasco

    KU jayhawkIf you follow the clicker news as doggedly as I do, you might have heard of the clicker fiasco at the University of Kansas last week. All 923 students aced the test when the clicker system (ours by the way) used to give the tests crashed, erasing scores for the entire class.

    However, what you probably didn’t hear was how quickly eInstruction jumped on correcting the problem. eInstruction President Steve Kaye personally visited the campus, and a Critical Mac Update was released this week and can be downloaded HERE.

    Why did this fiasco occur in the first place?

    The issue occurs in the Mac version of the CPS software related to use of Self Paced Testing, also referred to as SMA or Student Managed Assessment. The problem only occurs in the event that ALL four of the following criteria are met:

    • You are using the CPS Software on a Mac, AND
    • You are using the CPS RF (w LCD) clicker, AND;
    • You are administering multiple versions of a test using SMA (Self Paced) mode, AND;
    • You sort the incoming student responses using either the “Name” field or the “Attempted “ field.
    So…the updated version of CPS Mac is available for download HERE.

    Until then, if you cannot update CPS for Mac at this time, please refrain from sorting incoming student response data when giving a Self Paced Test (SMA) with multiple versions.
