Teaching Through TechnologyFebruary 2008 reprinted with permission Sullivan School showcased the new technology that is being implemented throughout the school, but especially in Mrs. McDaniel's 4th grade classroom. Hosting the Chamber Coffee held on Friday, February 22, 2008, Mrs. McDaniel's 4th grade class was able to show off the their tech-savvy ability, along with the programs such as the Classroom Performance System, PowerPoint, SmartBoard, Elmo, AVerVision, and many more advanced ways of learning through technology. The group of adults consisted of people who may have grown accustomed to sending texts (instead of passing notes during class), emailing, running a DVD player, have dabbled with WiFi (Wireless Internet), and have heard of Bluetooth technology. Most were amazed by the saturation of cross-curricular learning the students had been immersed in with the aid of technology.
With the advent of iPods, MP3 players, jump drives, laptops, Bluetooth, fast-paced processors, programs that best each other every year (and run almost the same), PCs, Macs, and every electronic gadget, it is not surprising that the schools are implementing more technology earlier. In order to produce technology savvy students who have been immersed from the beginning, USD 214 has installed a new computer lab at Sullivan School. This lab was built in March of 2007 and is home to both PC and Mac units. The lab is currently being utilized as a teaching aid for math, spelling, reading, and is used to procure grades from the lessons that have been completed during lab time. Along with Triple A Math and spelling web sites, the computer lab has enabled the students to hone their detective skills on the search engine site, Google. The lab also integrates spelling, reading, and typing lessons. Although the students may not always enjoy their Type to Learn program, it offers lessons on the correct method to key stroke. Aiding the learning process of specific key locations is the use of 'Skins', thin rubber covers which hide the letters and number of the board, strengthening the child's recall and key stroke ability. Along with the computer lab, Mrs. McDaniel's 4th grade class implements laptops, a Classroom Performance System, and many other technology based tools to aid the learning process. The Interactive White board appears to be an ordinary projection screen, but like any other invention, looks can be deceiving. Not only does the board allow projection, but it interacts like a blackboard or whiteboard, with the added bonus of being able to save the progress made by the students for future reference. Along with this program, this screen is paired with an Elmo, a device that captures real-time images and displays them in front of the class. This can be utilized in array of everyday activities, from class reading, displaying a homework page for the class to go over, to providing a simple solution of lack of books. These systems are run from the teacher's desktop computer through Bluetooth technology and have received resounding praise from the students in Mrs. McDaniel's class. With the integration and accessibility of technology, the students have been set on the road to becoming the next generation of tech-savvy individuals that will be able to coexist and command the upcoming advances in technology. |
The pathway to educational excellence lies within each school.
