We were so happy to see all of our customers that came out to our Customer Appreciation Holiday Reception. We all enjoyed an absolute feast of goodies and our lucky customers and their families left with Bluetooth speakers, WeMo switches, gift cards, Tiles and a variety of other gifts that each family found with their number on it beneath the tree. The kids were thrilled with their Christmas Pez dispensers, but it was Santa who was the real hit of the party!

We had so much fun that we were a little amiss about getting pictures of everyone, but we did manage to snap a few.

One of my favorite take-aways from the night was the look on the face of Ashley’s two older kids (Ashley provides sales support for us) as they saw Santa walk into the room. Their excitement was palpable!  As you might expect, there were a few kiddos that weren’t quite sure about the Santa business, but I think a lot of them let him know what they were wishing for this Christmas.

Kenley Moore explored the life cycle of a butterfly on zSpace, and her brother Cooper was a coloring machine on Boxlight’s new ProColor interactive flat panel that we got just in time to show off at the party.

The new Boxlight ProColor Interactive Flat Panel Display seemed to light up the whole room when we turned it on. Wow, is this display ever bright! This is definitely something you must check out for yourself in person. We were also impressed with the responsiveness.

Lily Schmidt took to the interactive flat panel displaying MimioStudio software like a duck to water and created some pretty magnificent Christmas trees!

Boxlight's new interactive flat panel

zSpace was a hit from young to old! Zoey and Wrigley Ridder explored the life cycle of a butterfly in 3D. Ethan Schmidt was a whiz on it, and he spent a lot of time investigating and troubleshooting a motor with his sister, Aubrey, looking on. Our high school senior,  Caden, checked out Newton’s Park physics playground.

The food was an absolute feast, and our own kids took advantage of it (they’re growing teenagers). When I asked our son Caden why he didn’t have much on his plate, he replied, “Mom, this is a process.”

Cookie decorating was a big hit with the kids, and Ainsley, Macy, and Jessie Flynn knew just what to do! We dare say it was a hit with the adults too from the number of cookie plates we saw, but surely no one was counting. Right?

Santa even took care of the big “kids” at the party too!

Couldn’t Make Our Customer Appreciation Holiday Reception?

We realize there were many who couldn’t be there because of driving distance, and a few of you who planned to be there had to cancel at the last minute.

However, we want all of you to know how much we appreciate you and your desire to see forward-moving change happen in your schools. We can’t think of anyplace we’d rather be than on this mission with all of you to make education engaging, enriching, and effective!

A Livescribe Smartpen Diorama is Born https://www.engaging-technologies.com/livescribe-smartpen-diorama/ https://www.engaging-technologies.com/livescribe-smartpen-diorama/#respond Thu, 08 Dec 2016 19:24:16 +0000 https://www.engaging-technologies.com/?p=3139 Creating a Livescribe smartpen diorama probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when discussing uses of the Livescribe smartpen in education. Creating a Livescribe smartpen diorama probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when discussing uses of the Livescribe smartpen in education.

What IS the first thing that comes to mind?

I’m guessing the first thing that comes to your mind is the ability to record audio of everything that happens in a class or meeting and at the same time creating digital notes that are linked with the recorded audio. That’s usually what people think of first. Unfortunately, some people think that is the only thing that can be done with a Livescribe smartpen.

However, there is a whole other realm of activities that can be created with the Livescribe smartpen. In fact, this realm of activities is one of my favorites because it allows students to be creative and to think outside the box.

Please, No…Not Another Cut and Paste Project!

One of these creative instances with the Livescribe smartpen happened when our son, Caden, was in sixth grade. Caden was never much of a “project kid.” Thoughts of cutting and gluing and making things “cute” (all things that prompted unending enthusiasm in our younger daughter) left Caden wanting to poke his eyes out with a pencil.

It wasn’t for lack of creativity that Caden abhorred these projects, but his fine motor control just wasn’t fantastic. His handwriting was “sketchy” (and I don’t mean that in an artistic fashion).  The detail work of making projects “cute” was not fun for him, draining all the life out of the learning the project was supposed to encourage. However, he was a gifted, out-of-the-box thinker who kept everyone laughing with his weird sound effects, witty puns, and endless accents and personas.

During this particular sixth grade project, Caden was supposed to create a diorama of a tomb for social studies. Just for kicks, I mentioned that he should do something with the Livescribe smartpen to add the facts to his diorama, stating that this would allow his classmates to actually interact with his project and would be a lot more fun for them (I also was tired of cut and paste projects my kids made that just ended up in the trash). Eager for something that sounded like a lot more fun than another cut and paste project, Caden got some quick instruction and took the Livescribe pen to his room to get to work.

A Livescribe Smartpen Diorama is Born

When he returned with audio dots cut from paper and glued to all the components of his diorama, I was impressed. After listening to them…I was rolling on the floor with laughter!

Caden was proud of what he’d created, anxious for me to hear his results, and he had a blast creating fun comments on each of his tomb components. In this instance, the Livescribe smartpen diorama allowed him to share his creativity in a way that was fun for him, made his project interactive (and definitely more enjoyable for those looking at it), and let him shine in his strengths.

You can see some of his completed project in the video below.

(Please note, I did take the liberty, when Livescribe introduced Sound Stickers, to rerecord his comments onto Sound Stickers rather than the original audio dots that he had created.)

Think Out of the Box With Your Livescribe Smartpen

If you’ve got a Livescribe smartpen collecting dust on your shelf, we would encourage you to remember it for projects like this Livescribe smartpen diorama and when students might want to go a different direction or need some motivation. Not every student enjoys cut and paste projects (for a variety of different reasons, I’m sure), so you never know just who might surprise you if you offer them a new component to try in their project. Technology can often be a “master motivator!”

This project was completed with a Livescribe Echo smartpen, the smartpen that we recommend for educators.

Mark you calendars for December 13th at 2 pm EST and don’t miss this upcoming webinar opportunity: Post Processing in 3D Printing!

Desktop 3D printing has had a dramatic impact on how professionals work and what students learn. However, the value of 3D printing doesn’t necessarily end with the print. With a little extra post-processing work, you can create highly realistic prototypes, packaging, molds, and even functional machines – all at a fraction of the cost of traditional manufacturing methods.

The ability to start with PLA plastic prints, and quickly and inexpensively get production quality parts in silicone, vacuum formed plastic, or threaded brass inserts in enclosures, is something desired by education and industry alike.

Register here and then tune in December 13th at 2 PM EST for a special presentation from MakerBot about how a 3D print can be an aesthetically realistic prototype, a mold for an end-use product, a functional machine or device, and much more. In addition, you’ll get best practices on how to create objects larger than the build volume of your 3D printer.

.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .

Click here to register and be sure to tune in on Tuesday, December 13th at 2 PM EST!

Swivl made a splash when Engaging Technologies visited customers last month with Emily Merritt, Swivl’s User Success Manager.  Emily made the journey from California to spend some time on the road with ET Team Members, Dustin and Kent, visiting schools in both Kansas and Nebraska.

The first stop was Lincoln Public Schools where ET had great conversations with some of their Instructional Design coaches around using Swivl as a video recording tool for teacher feedback and evaluation.

When ET met with the instructional coaches at Geary County Schools USD 475, their ideas were centered around using Swivl as an evaluation tool for teachers, as well as allowing students to use Swivl for projects and allowing students to evaluate one another.

We had a super day working with these Geary County Instructional Coaches!

Emily Merritt, Swivl Education Success User, shares Swivl Cloud with Geary County Instructional Coaches.

The stop to visit with the K-State Teacher Education program was enlightening to say the least. Not only is Swivl instrumental in their Teacher Education program, but they have presented several times on the topic “Enhanced Supervision Opportunities: Technology as a Vehicle for Enabling Distance Supervision and Improving Accountability,” and continue to do research on this idea.

K-State Students teachers now use Swivl to record and submit multiple teaching sessions to their supervising teacher at KSU. Supervisors are able to evaluate these recordings, provide feedback through the ProCloud, and tag the videos with certain strategies, examples etc. This has allowed supervising teachers to evaluate students multiple times without spending so much time (and gas money) on multiple trips across the state.

Students have even commented that the self-reflection Swivl is enabling has vastly improved their teaching at a much faster rate. We are excited to see what other new developments come out of this program!

K-State Swivl meeting

Hearing from K-State and how Swivl is improving their Teacher Education program was so exciting. We can’t wait to see what other incredible information comes from their Swivl use!

Our final stop was at Mid-America Nazarene with their Teacher Education program. They are looking into using Swivl for flipping their own college classrooms and making classroom instruction available to students that miss class. They’ll also be trying out the use of Swivl in their student teaching experiences.

With these visits in the books, we were thrilled to see the varied uses for different environments that Swivl provides. The excitement surrounding Swivl at every stop was palpable. Video is changing education and Swivl makes it easy!
